BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Bucknell University goalie Matt Napleton (Jr., Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) made 42 saves in a 2-1 weekend for the No. 18-ranked Bison to earn the September 26 Men's Varsity Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week award.
He recorded 12 saves against No. 16-ranked United States Naval Academy (10-9 W) and a career-high 14 saves versus Johns Hopkins University (11-9 L OT), before bettering the total with 16 stops against George Washington University (10-8 W) in a swing against the squads below the Mason-Dixon line.
Napleton, who has recorded double-digit save totals in four of the Bison's past five games and had recorded 42 saves in Bucknell's first six games entering the division weekend, notched 14 saves, 11 goals allowed and one assist in an 11-9 overtime loss at Johns Hopkins on Saturday to begin the march through the South.
Later in the day, he tallied 12 saves, nine goals allowed, one steal and three assists as the No. 18 Bison upended No. 16 Navy 10-9 in Annapolis.
On Sunday, he concluded the weekend with a career high 16 saves, eight goals allowed and a steal in a 10-8 victory at George Washington University.
On of four Bison to start all nine games this season, he now has 84 saves in nine games, an average of 9.3 saves per game.
The award marks the third Defensive Player of the Week nod in four weeks for Napleton who previously picked up the September 5 and September 19 accolades.
