ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- No. 13-ranked Princeton University scored four of the game’s last five goals to hand No. 16-ranked Navy an 11-9 overtime setback on Saturday afternoon in Lejeune Hall.

The loss drops Navy to 13-4 overall and 0-1 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division. Princeton improves to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in the CWPA South.

Navy now leads the all-time series against Princeton, 52-22, but Navy is just 7-6 against Princeton since the start of the 2008 season. Navy has scored just 10 goals in three of the 13 games during that span.

Princeton took an early 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter, but Navy responded by scoring two straight goals for a 3-2 lead with 1:44 to play on an Arny Warren goal. But Princeton tied the game at three with just 38 seconds left in the first quarter.

Princeton would score the second quarter’s only goal just 1:44 into the frame for a 4-3 halftime advantage.

Paul Pedrotty would take over for Navy in the third quarter, scoring all three Midshipmen goals to give Navy a 6-5 lead at the end of the third quarter. His final goal of the quarter came with just 23 seconds left in the frame and broke a 5-5 tie heading into the final stanza.

Pedrotty then scored his fourth goal in a row at the 7:39 mark of the fourth quarter to give the Midshipmen a 7-5 advantage, the contest’s first two-goal lead for either side.

Princeton rallied, scoring the next two goals coming at the 4:25 and 3:24 marks to tie the game at seven. Navy regained the lead on an  Archie Warren five-meter goal with 2:15 to play, but Princeton sent the game into overtime tied at eight on a netter with just 21 seconds left.

Princeton controlled the overtime session, taking the lead for good with 1:03 to play in the first overtime period. In heartbreaking fashion, Princeton freshman Sam Butler scored with just 1.4 seconds left to give the Tigers a 10-8 cushion entering the second, three-minute overtime session.

Navy cut the lead to 10-9 on Arny Warren’s second goal with 1:47 to play, but Princeton scored on its next possession for an 11-9 lead, and the Tigers were able to run out the clock to hand Navy its first league setback.

Pedrotty led Navy with four goals, while Arny Warren scored twice. Archie Warren, Tommy Schofer and Pat Seipp scored once for Navy.
