Iona College Handles Harvard University 13-4, Falls to MIT 12-11 in Northern Division Openers
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Iona College downed Harvard University (13-4 W) and fell to MIT (12-11 L) at home in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division openers for the Gaels.
Against Harvard, the Gaels were
led on the offensive end by senior Cameron Hudson, who found the net four
times in the contest. Freshman Jake Lloyd, the back-to-back Northern
Division Rookie of the Week, began his campaign for a third
straight with a three goal effort.
Sophomore Lee Stiles found the net twice for Iona,
with seniors Ryan Scott, Matt Joslyn, junior Kristian Bocage and sophomore
Matthew Stelnicki filling out the
scoring column for the Gaels with one goal apiece. Sophomore
Stefen Hill was magnificent in net,
stopping eight shots for Iona.
The leading scorer for Harvard
was senior Kevin DiSilvestro, who scored twice.
Junior Max Eliot and freshman Max
Murphy each scored one goal for the Crimson.
In their second home contest of
the day, the Gaels fell to MIT in a closely contested matchup. Down
11-8 in the fourth, Iona stormed back with three consecutive goals
to tie the contest before an Engineers tally with less than a
minute remaining gave the away team the one goal victory.
The Gaels' leading scorers were
Hudson and Lloyd, who each had three goals in the contest. Hudson
netted two fourth quarter goals in the Gaels' comeback.
Stiles matched his game one output with two goals, while
Stelnicki, Bocage and freshman Tyler Mancuso had one goal apiece.
Hill made ten stops, marking his seventh double digit save
effort of the season.
For MIT, sophomore Craig
Cheney led the Engineers with four goals. Senior
Matt Chapa and freshmen Dylan
Hallman and Jack Clark each had two goals
in the contest. Senior Nikola Otasevic and
sophomore Andrew Dorne had one goal each for
MIT.
