SALEM, W. Va. -- The Gannon University men's water polo team used a seven-goal explosion in the first quarter to earn a second straight win, handing host Salem International University a 10-5 loss in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division-West Region play.
Gannon wasted no time in jumping on the Tigers, holding a 7-1 lead after the first eight minutes. Salem managed to out-score Gannon in the second quarter by a 2-1 margin, but the Golden Knights still held a 8-3 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Gannon added two more scores, while Salem netted one. Gannon failed to score in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers added just one goal, giving Gannon the 10-5 win.
A total of six different Golden Knights scored in the match, led by Greg Nelson (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) who netted three. Tommy Nimrod (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and Nathan Bean (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) both scored twice while Kyle Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Cody Sherman (Erie, Pa./McDowell) each netted one.
Gannon's Neal Zoellick (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) had five blocks in goal for the Golden Knights.
