Salem International University Withdraws from 2012 CWPA Eastern Championship; Format to Remain
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Salem International University has elected to withdraw from the 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship at Brown University this weekend. The competitive format will remain the same all games the Tigers were to have competed in will be considered forfeits.
Due to several injuries, the Tigers are unable to field a competitive team this weekend and have elected to not travel to Providence, R.I. Per the league's Board of Directors, after considering the potential impact of a restructured championship format and the exsisting guidelines established by the league membership at past Annual Meetings, the structure and timing of the championship format will remain unchanged for this weekend.
The University of Michigan, which claimed the Western Division title two weeks ago, will lead the now field of 12 teams into the championship tournament looking for the program's sixth Eastern Championship after previously claiming the 2002, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010 titles. In addition, the Wolverines will seek to reach their fifth consecutive Eastern title game, a feat no team has equaled since Slippery Rock University made the 1988-96 Eastern championship games.
Per CWPA rules, the top two seeds in the tournament were reserved for the Western and Southern Division champions, as Princeton University, which captured the Southern Division crown, claimed the No. 2 seed. The Tigers are seeking their second league title game appearance and Eastern Championship in women's water polo after claiming the 2000 title.
The Western Division dominates the remaining three spots in the Top Five as defending and 2003 Eastern Champion Indiana University and division regular season champion the University of Maryland hold the No. 3 and 4 seeds, respectively, while three-time Eastern Champion (2004, 2006, 2007) Hartwick College was selected fifth by the committee.
2001 Eastern Champion Brown University, Harvard University, Bucknell University, George Washington University and Mercyhurst College encompass a Southern Division run at No. 6-to-10, while Gannon University and Notre Dame College complete the 12-competing squads at No. 11-to-12.
Per NCAA rules, Salem will be charged with three losses as the contests will count towards their overall record, while the teams the Tigers were to play will receive a 5-0 victory.
The forfeits will have an impact on the championship schedule as Game 2, 10 and 15 will not be contested. No games will be moved up to replace those contests, as the championship structure and all-streaming of games via the league's partnership with Stretch Internet will not occur during the alloted 80 minute windows of time.
For fans unable to trek to Providence, the CWPA will once again stream the entire active championship bracket on a pay-per-view basis. Unlike previous seasons, the league has invested in the purchase of a TriCaster, a professional video switcher that will allow the CWPA to use a three-camera feed under the directon of recently hired Director of Multimedia Alex Lourido.
Fans can access the broadcasts on championship weekends by clicking on the Stretch Internet logo below and registering. The cost of viewership is $9.99 per game, or $25 for the weekend championship package that includes all the contested games.
