Brown University Growls Past Mercyhurst University, 11-3, & Harvard University, 7-6, to Reach Southern Division Championship Game

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Brown University women's water polo team defeated both Mercyhurst University (11-3 W) and Harvard University (7-6 W) to advance to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Championship game at high noon tomorrow versus Princeton University.

In Brown's first game against Mercyhurst, Liz Rosen led the attack with five goals, while also scoring was Emily McNamara, Samantha Ryu, Sarah Presant, Brittany Westerman and Kate Woods.

Both squads tallied a goal in the first quarter, but the Bears started to pull away after outscoring their opponent 3-0 in the second and 5-1 in the third to take a 9-1 lead heading into the final quarter. Brown edged Mercyhurst 2-1 in the fourth to earn the 11-3 victory.

The win improved Brown to 18-13 overall, while the loss dropped Mercyhurst to 9-16 on the year.

Brown's second game vs. Harvard was tight as the Bears edged the Crimson 7-6 to advance to the championship game. The Bears and Crimson went goal-for-goal in the first two quarters to be deadlocked 2-2 at the intermission. Harvard then outscored Bruno 3-1 in the third quarter to take a 5-3 lead, but the Bears roared back in the fourth scoring four goals to Harvard's one to earn the one-goal victory.

McNamara, Woods and Presant each netted two goals apiece for the Bears, while Madison Pepper added one. Brown improved to 19-13 overall while Harvard dropped to 14-10.
