CWPA Releases Week 11/April 4 Women's Varsity Polls

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of California-Los Angeles and Grove City College hold onto their No. 1 rankings in the National Top 20 and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III balloting, while the University of Maryland and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges climb to the top in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division I/II and National Top 10 Division III weekly polls as the national rankings were released for games through Monday, April 2.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on each Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

 

 

2012 Women's Varsity National Top 20

Another week, another top ranking for the University of California-Los Angeles as the Bruins continue to dominate the Women's Varsity National Top 20 ranking and became a unanimous No. 1 selection with 100 points in the Week 11/April 4 National Poll.

UCLA, which took over the top spot five weeks ago, tops a poll which experienced a shift in the middle portion of the Top 20

Stanford University (95 points), the University of Southern California (90 points), Arizona State  University (85 points), University of California (80 points), University of California-Irvine (75 points) and Loyola Marymount University (69 points) continue to cling to the No. 2-to-7 positions, respectively, while San Jose State University (66 points) jumps two spots to No. 8 this week.

Due to San Jose's improvement, San Diego State University (60 points) falls one slot back to No. 9 with the University of California-Davis (53 points) rising into the Top 10 after rating at No. 11 a week ago.

The pattern of movement started with San Jose State, San Diego State and UC-Davis continues at No. 11-to-14 as the Univeristy of Maryland (48 points) used a 7-6 victory over Princeton University on Saturday to move up to No. 11.  Indiana University (46 points), which downed previously No. 9-ranked the University of Michigan via an 8-7 final score on Saturday, ascends two spots to No. 12, while Michigan (36 points) and Princeton (36 points) drop back to No. 13 and 14, respectively.

The University of California-Santa Barbara (29 points), University of Hawaii (24 points), California State University-Northridge (20 points), and University of California-San Diego (15 points) hold at No. 15 to 18, with California Baptist University (9 points) and Hartwick College (8 points) androunding out the Top 20.

2012 Women's Varsity Division III Top 10

The top position in the Women's Varsity Division III Top 10 exchanges hands this week as Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (100 points) used a 15-13 victory over previously top-ranked Occidental College (95 points) to dislodge Tigers and become the unanimous No. 1 pick in the April 4 poll.

Occidental drops to No. 2 as the Pomona-Pitzer/Occidental switch marks one of three position exchanges among Top Six teams in the rankings.

The University of Redlands (89 points) improves to No. 3, California Lutheran University (86 points) slides to No. 4, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (80 points) moves to No. 5 and Whittier College (73 points) slips to No. 6 to conclude the changes to the Division III rankings.

Chapman University (71 points), University of La Verne (65 points), Grove City College (61 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (55 points) complete the Top 10.

2012 Women's CWPA Division I/II Top 10

For the first time since the Week8/March 14 rankings, the University of Maryland (100 points) stands as the No. 1 team in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division I/II Top 10 Poll.

The Terrapins, which downed Princeton University (86 points) 7-6 over the weekend while former No. 1 ranked the University of Michigan (89 points) fell to Indiana University (95 points) via an 8-7 final score, received all the first place votes to now rank as the unanimous top selection in the CWPA entering the final weekend of regular season conference play.

Maryland, which can clinch the No. 1 seed for the Western Division Championship tournament with a victory over Michigan this weekend in College Park, Md., is followed by Indiana as the pair of Western Division squads both jumped a pair of positions to rate as the league's best programs.

Michigan and Princeton both slide down as the Wolverines and Tigers take over the spots vacated by the Terrapins and Hoosiers. 

The remainder of the Top 10 remains unchanged as Hartwick College (80 points), Harvard University (74 points), Brown University (71 points), Bucknell University (65 points), George Washington University (60 points) and Mercyhurst University (55 points) hold on at No. 6-to-10, respectively.

2012 Women's CWPA Division III Top 5

Grove City College remains a unanimous selection as the No. 1 team in the Week 11/April 4 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Top Five Poll for the 12th consecutive week dating back to the preseason balloting.

Overall, the rankings remain mostly unchanged from the March 28 poll as Washington & Jefferson College (95 points), Wheaton College (90 points) and Macalester College (85 points) retain their previous spots at No. 2-to-4. 

The lone change in the poll occurs at No. 5 as Connecticut College (64 points) used an 8-7 victory over Carthage College at the CWPA Division III East-vs.-West Tournament hosted by Wheaton College to take over in the rankings final position.
