Zdrojewski Scores Five as Harvard University Handles Gannon University 17-3 in CWPA Eastern Championship Opening Round
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Monica Zdrojewski (Jr., Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills) netted five goals in the first half, including three in the first period, as Harvard University handled Gannon University 17-3 in the opening round of the 2011 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women's Eastern Championship at Indiana University's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
The key to the game for Harvard was Gannon ejections as the Crimson converted on 10 of the Golden Knights' 12 miscues for the bulk of the scoring in the contest.
Harvard poured it on early outscoring Gannon 6-1 in both the first and second periods to carry a 12-2 lead into intermission. Following the break, the Crimson offense cooled down from a white-hot to post a mere five goals over the final 16 minutes of action.
For Harvard, five players recorded multi-goal games led by Zdrojewski's five markers. Shannon Purcell (Jr., Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) chipped in four goals, while Devan Kennifer (Jr., Monterey, Calif./Santa Catalina), Shayna Price (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and Aisha Price (So., Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) tacked on pairs of goals in the winning effort.
In cage, Laurel McCarthy (Jr., Riverforest, Ill./Fenwick) and Shami Entenman (Sr., Groose Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) split time and combined for 10 saves.
Gannon received solo scores from Colleen Harriger (Jr., Erie, Pa./McDowell), Katelyn Jacobs (Fr., Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) and Molly Andrews (Jr., Tustin, Calif./Tustin) to account for the Golden Knights' scoring, while goalie Janelle Bartman (So., Darien, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) chipped in seven saves.
With the win, Harvard advances to face host and No. 13-nationally ranked Indiana tonight at 7:30 p.m. with the berth in the tournament semifinals on the line. Gannon will face Brown University, a 16-11 victim at the hands of Bucknell University, at noon on Saturday, April 30 in the consolation bracket.
