Former Hartwick College Standout Bronwen Knox Named to Australian Women's Water Polo FINA World Championships Roster
BRISBANE, Australia -- Former Hartwick College standout Bronwen Knox was named to the 14-member Team Australia roster for this month's international tournament in Perth and the subsequent FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China later in July.
The players were selected to travel to Perth where they will have their final World Championships training camp and key lead up matches against Greece, Hungary, New Zealand and the Australian 20 & Under squad.
Among six players left from Australia's bronze medal performance at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Knox was a two-time All-America selection at Hartwick, where she continues to rank among the all-time leaders in Hawks' history.
Knox, a native of Brisbane, was a two time All-America selection during her career at Hartwick. She led the nation in goals in 2006 with 127 en route to becoming a second team honoree. She left Hartwick following the season to train with the Australian National Team. As a freshman, she was recognized as an honorable mention All-America following her 102-goal, 31-assist effort in 2005. She was also chosen as a first team All-Eastern Championship and All-CWPA Northern Division honoree both years as well.
Despite only playing two years at Hartwick, she ranks among the program leaders in goals (229), steals (209), total points (286) and holds the single-season records for goals (127) and steals (117).
Australia head coach Greg McFadden
believes his team is in a good position ahead of the world
championships and said their schedule in 2011 has enabled them to
fine tune their game plans ahead of the year's major
tournament.
"The World League competition and the training camp at the
Australian Institute of Sport has the girls very well prepared to
perform in Shanghai and I am looking forward to seeing where we are
placed 12 months out from the London Olympics," McFadden said.
"We have selected a squad of 14 for
the Perth tournament to cover the chance of any injury and to give
players an extra opportunity to stake their claim for
selection."
One player will be dropped from the squad of 14 prior to the team
heading to Shanghai.
The team will be in camp for nine
days in Perth before flying to Shanghai on the 13th of July.
Their first round opponent at the FINA World Championship is 2009
runner-up Canada before games against neighbors New Zealand and
fellow Asian competitor Uzbekistan.
Water polo at the FINA World Championships commences on July 17
with the women's competition finishing on July 29.
