ATLANTA, Ga. -- Wes Sjoholm (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.), Jordan Lunetta (Jr., Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Kevin Dunn (So., Escondido, Calif.) each recorded pairs of goals as No. 7 Arizona State University torched No. 2 University of California-Santa Cruz 12-1 to reach the fifth place game of the 2011 Men's National Collegiate Club Championship at Georgia Tech University's Campus Recreation Center.
The Sun Devils will face either the University of Illinois-Chicago or No. 14 Texas Tech University at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, November 13 as ASU will attempt to notch back-to-back fifth place finishes after placing fifth at the 2010 National Collegiate Club Championship on the campus of Southern Utah University.
In the history of the Arizona State program, the Sun Devils have placed third (2008), fifth (2010) and 13th (2007) as the squad is now guaranteed of notching its third Top 10 finish in the past four seasons.
Against the Sierra Pacific Division champion Banana Slugs, the Rocky Mountain Division champion Sun Devils wasted little time in taking the lead for good as Travis Addante (Jr., Whittier, Calif.) whipped in a marker at 2:54 of the first period. UC-Santa Cruz produced all the offense the Slugs would manage against ASU's defense 20 seconds later when Sean Shughrou (Fr., Temecula, Calif.) sidearmed in the tying score at 2:34.
From there, the game, on both ends of the pool, belonged to Arizona State as Lunetta arched in a shot with 1:44 to go in the opening period to start an 11-0 scoring run for ASU to the final horn.
Cory Peterson (Gr., Rockford, Mich.) started the second period with his lone score of the contest at 6:31, Nick Ryan (So., Alamo, Calif.) tacked on a man-up goal at 6:01 and Dunn did in the hopes of a Banana Slugs' rally with back-to-back markers at 4:23 and 1:41 to put the Sun Devils comfortably in front 6-1 at halftime.
The second half brought more of the same as ASU poured in five scores in the third period and one more in the fourth to take the game by 11-goals.
Besides the trio of Sjoholm, Lunetta and Dunn, six other Arizona State players found the cage as Addante, Ryan, Alan Nguyen (Sr., San Jose, Calif.), Ryan Bethell (Gr., Clovis, Calif.), Peterson and Simon Hood (Jr., Ladera, Calif.) contribued solo goals to aid in the win.
In addition, Todd Clapper (Gr., Hollidaysburg, Pa.) turned away 10 of UC-Santa Cruz's 11 shots on cage to claim his second victory of the tournament.
For the Banana Slugs, the duo of Michael Galate (Jr., Malibu, Calif.) and Blair MacDougall (Sr., Fresno, Calif.) combined for eight saves as Galate took the defeat as the netminder for the first half.
UC-Santa Cruz, the 2010 Division III Collegiate Club National Champions, will finish up their participation in the 2011 National Collegiate Club field on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. against the loser of a meeting between Texas Tech and Illinois-Chicago.
