Rubin Leads No. 17 Yale Past No. 11 Colorado 7-6 in National Collegiate Club Seventh Place Game
2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Schedule & Scores
CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Yale University goalie Keith Rubin (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) turned away 11 scoring tries by No. 11 University of Colorado to earn Player of the Game honors and lead No. 17 Yale University to a 7-6 victory in the seventh place game of the 2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Championship at Southern Utah University.
A five-time New England Division champion, the Bulldogs placement marks an improvement over last year when the squad finished ninth at the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Florida. In addition, it marks the fifth Top 10 at Nationals by Yale in the past eight years as the Bulldogs placed fifth in 2005, fourth in 2004 and third in 2003.
Following consective goals by Jamie Savant (Jr., Fair Oaks, Calif.) and Peter Lorenz (Sr., Greenwich, Conn.) at 3:19 and 2:29, respectively, to give Colorado a 2-0 lead in the first period, Yale took command of the game in the second period.
Paul Orland (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) zipped in back-to-back markers of his own at 6:31 and 5:56 to knot the game up before David Skophammer (Jr., Palos Verdes, Calif.) nailed a man-up chance into the cage for a 3-2 Bulldogs' lead with 4:38 left in the first half.
The Buffaloes roamed to tie the game twice and retake the lead in the third period.
In the wake of a score by Ryan Vick (Sr., Thousand Oaks, Calif.) to tie the game at 6:17, Yale went back in front with another tally by Skophammer (5:56). The lead lasted for 1:56 as Steve Nester (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) fired in a ball to retie the score at 4-to-4 at the four minute mark.
Forty seconds later, the Buffaloes went ahead as JP Muller (Fr., Newport, Calif.) launched a shot inside the post with 3:20 on the clock to stake Colorado to a 5-4 advantage.
Needing a score to retie the game and potentially force overtime, the Bulldogs turned to Skophammer who converted in a man-up chance at 4:02 to equal the scoring at 5-to-5. Orland returned the lead to Yale at the 2:37 mark with a rocket off a catch-and-shoot opportunity before Thomas Lazzarini (Sr., San Marino, Calif.) buried a five-meter penalty shot inside the upper left corner of the cage for the eventual game-winner with 54 ticks on the game clock.
Colorado attempted to claw its way back into the game as Muller beat Rubin on an advantage opportunity with 21 seconds remaining, but the Yale defense held for the remainder of the period to stave off the Buffaloes and pick up the victory.
For Colorado, Dylan Gantly (Jr., Cupertino, Calif.) concluded the day with three saves as the Buffaloes improved dramatically on their last appearance at the National Collegiate Club Championship, a 12th place mark in 2008 at Ohio University, and tied the program's best ever finish set in 2001 (eighth) when the team fell to Darmouth College 13-7 in the seventh place game. In addition, the squad finishes one place off the division record for a team at Nationals as the University of Utah placed seventh a year ago at Florida.
