No. 15 Pennsylvania Cruises Past Illinois State 9-4 at National Collegiate Club Championship
2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Schedule & Scores
CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Patrick Buck (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Nick Grover (Fr., Pasadena, Calif.) both netted hat-tricks as No. 15 the University of Pennsylvania outlasted Illinois State University 9-4 in the consolation bracket of the 2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Championship at Southern Utah University.
The Quakers will next face No. 13 Grand Valley State University at 2:50 on Saturday, November 13 with a berth in the ninth place game at stake, while Illinois State will meet Columbia University at 9:50 p.m. in one of two 13th place games.
Due to the 30 game schedule of the National Collegiate Club Championship and the amount of pool time available, the 13th and 15th place matches are not played, thus causing the winner of the Redbirds next game to be one of two 13th place teams, while the loser is among a pair of 15th place finishers in the 16-team field.
Penn trailed only once in the game as David Kuchta (Jr., Flossmoor, Ill.) commenced the scoring with a man-up tally at 1:34 to stake Illinois State to a 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived as Buck blasted a bomb into the cage at 1:18 and Ryan Percy (So., D.M., Trinidad) racked-up a man-up marker with 27 seconds left in the first period to give Penn the lead for good.
In a back-and-forth second period in which neither team could crack the other's defense for much in terms of offense, Penn was able to build the margin to two goals before halftime thanks to a natural strike by Dan O'Neill (Gr., Garden City, N.Y.) with 3:27 left in the second period.
Pennsylvania never relinquished the two-goal margin as Buck found the back of the cage again at 1:24 of the third period to make it a three-score game. ISU attempted to close the gap with a tally by Russell Maanum (Fr., Flossmoor, Ill.) at the 1:13 mark, but Penn answered exactly one minute later with a goal by Brady Sieber (Gr., Erie, Pa.) to expand the lead to 5-2.
Buck completed his hat-trick (6:42) with an even-strength goal and Player of the Game Grover started his own (3:57) with an advantage marker at 3:57 to make it a 7-2 game. Pat Kraulis (Jr., Schaumburg, Ill.) netted a man-up goal at 2:47 to move the Redbirds within four at 7-3, but back-to-back man-up goals by Grover at 2:47 and 1:55 completed his fourth period/advantage hat-trick to hand Penn a six-goal lead at 9-3.
Mike Byron (So., Barrington, Ill.) closed out the scoring at the 17 seconds mark for the five-goal margin-of-victory at 9-4.
In goal, Kerry Kellogg (Gr., Granite Bay, Calif.) earned the win making 11 saves. Matt Temple (So., Highland Park, Ill.) took the loss for ISU with three blocks.
