No. 3 Arizona State Bedevils No. 13 Grand Valley State 6-0 in National Collegiate Club Championship First Round
2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Schedule & Scores
CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Clay Solomon (So., Long Beach, Calif.) made six saves and turned aside five man-up bids by the No. 13 ranked Lakers of Grand Valley State University to aid No. 3 Arizona State University in picking up a 6-0 victory in the opening round of the 2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Championship at Southern Utah University's Sorenson Center.
The victory moves Southwest Division champion ASU in a 12:30 p.m. quarterfinal match-up on Saturday, November 13 against the winner of a first round game between No. 4 the University of Texas and No. 19 Columbia University. Grand Valley State, the Great Lakes Division champion, will meet the loser of the Texas-Columbia game at 8:40 p.m. tonight in the consolation side of the bracket.
In a game of defense, the Sun Devils were able to shine on the offensive end of the pool just enough in the early going to build a lead.
Travis Dunn (So., Escondido, Calif.) broke the ice and netted the game-winner with 2:54 left in the first period as he shook his defender on a man-up bid and uncorked a blast that eluded GVSU goalie Peter Huyser (Sr., Zeeland, Mich.) for a 1-0 lead.
The margin expanded to 2-0 with 55 seconds left in the second period as Simon Hood (So., Ladera, Calif.) popped a shot over the outstretched arms of Huyser to make it 2-0 through a half of play.
ASU continued to tack on goals when the Lakers' defense wavered as Kevin Dunn (Fr., Escondido, Calif.) ripped in a shot at 5:42 and Jordan Lunetta (So., Sunnyvale, Calif.) lined a marker into the cage at 1:35 of the third period to make it 4-0.
Wesley Sjoholm (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) and Dunn closed out the scoring with strikes at 5:08 and 1:51 of the fourth period for the 6-0 final score.
The offensive output was significantly lower than the Sun Devils' normal scoring capacity as ASU entered the National Collegiate Club field tallying 16.22 goals per contest, while allowing a Southwest Division low 5.55 goals per game.
For GVSU, Huyser finsihed with six saves in taking the loss as the Lakers are guaranteed to finish no higher than ninth in the final tournament standings.
