Peterson Nets Four as No. 16 Texas A&M Handles Illinois State 11-2 in National Collegiate Club 13th Place Game
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Laura Peterson (Jr., Houston, Texas) scored four goals to earn Player of the Game honors, while Stephanie Payne (Gr., Houston, Texas) chipped in a hat-trick, as No. 16 Texas A&M University stopped Illinois State University 11-2 in the 13th Place game of the 2010 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship.
The game marks the first time that the 13th and 15th place games were played out at the tournament as previously the teams that would have played in the games remained tied in the final tournament standings.
Due to over half the Illinois State team having to leave for flights home to Normal, Illinois, the Redbirds played the game short-handed.
The Aggies opened a 4-0 lead with 6:43 left in the third period and saw the margin dwindle to 5-2 with 5:01 remaining in the period. However, Texas A&M outscored Illinois State 6-0 down the stretch, including a 4-0 margin in the fourth period, to overpower the Redbirds and place 13th in the final tournament standings.
It marks the third highest finish in the history of the championship for the Aggies as Texas A&M previously placed 15th (2008), 12th (2005) and eighth (2001).
For the Aggies, Maryann Moyer (So., Houston, Texas) added two goals, while Elinor Martin (Gr., Worcestershire, England) and Rachel Edwards (Sr., Houston, Texas) tacked on solo scores.
Ashley Rampick (So., Oak Lawn, Ill.) and Lindsay McCool (Fr., Oak Lawn, Ill.) registered the two scores for Illinois State which made its first appearance at the National Collegiate Club Championship.
In cage, Erin Kasparek
(Jr., Houston, Texas) notched six stops, while
Emily Bornhoff (Fr., La Grange, Ill.) for the Redbirds.
