No. 6 Oregon Waddles Past No. 19 Central Florida 8-3 to Reach National Collegiate Club Semifinals
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Six different players scored as the No. 6-ranked University of Oregon Ducks built a 5-0 lead midway through the third period and did enough to hold off No. 19 University of Central Florida 8-3 and reach the semifinals of the 2010 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Arizona.
The victory places the Ducks into a semifinal match-up with No. 4 University of Michigan at 7:30 p.m. this evening as Oregon is guaranteed to place in the top four teams at the championship for the third consecutive year. Previously, the Ducks finished second (2008) and third (2009) after notching fourth (2001), fifth (2007), eighth (2005), 10th (2002) and 13th (2006) marks in the team's other National Collegiate Club appearances.
Oregon never trailed in the game as Player of the Game Laura von Stockhausen (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) and Caitlin Hermann (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) connected on shots at the 3:03 and 2:12 marks of the first period, respectively.
Hermann added a man-up goal at the 2:48 mark of the second period and Chantelle Savoie (Fr., Newbury Park, Calif.) contributed a natural goal at 1:59 to put the Ducks in front 4-0 at halftime.
Hilary Wilcox (So., Portland, Ore.) wrapped up Oregon's scoring run to open the contest with an even-strength goal at the 3:58 mark to make it 5-0 as the margin would be too much for the Lady Knights to overcome.
Stephanie Beauchemin (Sr., Sanford, Fla.) put UCF on the board with 2:06 remainig in the period before Lizzy Flower (Sr., Lafayette, Calif.) responded for the Ducks. The period ended with back-to-back tallies by Stefanie Clark (So., Altamonte Springs, Fla.) and Beauchemin 25-seconds apart at the 1:26 and 1:01 marks to set the score at 6-3.
Facing a potential Lady Knights' comeback bid in the fourth period, Oregon closed out the game with von Stockhausen netting a natural goal at 5:34 and Beth Gordon (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) finishing on a five-meter penalty shot with 4:39 top play for the 8-3 final score.
In cage, Jessica Kragt (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) recorded seven saves for Oregon to earn the win, while Blaire Martin (Sr., Altamonte Springs, Fla.) blocked aside three shots for the Lady Knights.
In the consolation bracket later this evening, Central Florida will take on No. 3 University of Notre Dame at 9:50 p.m. for a spot in the fifth place game.
