Byron Scores Four to Key Illinois State Past No. 19 NYU 8-6 to Advance to National Collegiate Club 13th Place Game
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Christine Byron (Jr., Barrington, Ill.) scored four times and Ashley Rampick (So. Oak Lawn, Ill.) added a hat-trick as the unranked Illinois State University Redbirds handled No. 19 New York University 8-6 to advance to the 13th place game at the 2010 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Arizona.
The Redbirds will take on No. 16 Texas A&M University at Hillenbrand Pool during a 10:10 a.m. contest on Sunday, April 25, while NYU will meet No. 17 Boston College at 9:00 a.m. in the 15th place game.
Illinois State fell behind early in the game as Katelyn Schlactus (Gr., Newberg, Ore.) converted on a man-up chance with 6:12 left in the first period, but the Redbirds soared back into the game when Byron lined a shot past Violets' goalie Lauren Reilly (Jr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) with 39 seconds left in the period to tie the game.
The teams traded goals in the second period with Byron scoring at 5:20 to put ISU in front 2-1. Rita Warkov (Jr., Los Gatos, Calif.) countered for NYU with a marker at 4:43 before NYU went back ahead at 3-2 on a catch-and-shoot by Meg Weichman (Sr., Okemos, Mich.) with 3:44 left in the first half. Illinois State evened the score at 3-3 with a marker by Danielle Soudan (Sr., Mundelein, Ill.) with 2:24 showing on the clock to set up a climatic second half.
NYU retook the lead at 4-3 with a man-up tally by Nisa Nguyen (So., San Diego, Calif.) 55 seconds into the third period, but Illinois State went on a 4-0 scoring run fueled by back-to-back scoring shots by Byron at 5:14 and 3:43 to make it 5-4.
The run continued as Ashley Rampick (So., Oak Lawn, Ill.) fired home scores at 3:01 and 30 seconds to register the game-winning goal and take a 7-4 lead.
New York closed to within a goal midway through the fourth period as Schlactus scored on an exclusion chance at 5:03 and added a natural goal at 4:01 to make it 7-6. Needing a score to ice the victory, Rampick converted on a man-up chance with 1:04 left on the game clock for the 8-6 final score.
In cage, Courtney Monaghan (So., Elmhurst, Ill.) finished with nine saves to earn Player of the Game accolades, while Reilly stopped 13 shots for the Violets.
