No. 2 UCLA Hammers No. 16 Texas A&M 18-8 in National Collegiate Club Championship Opening Round
TUCSON, Ariz. -- No. 2-ranked UCLA received scoring from seven players, including four goals by Desiree Wilson (Jr., LaVerne, Calif.) and Erica Bonetti (Gr., Burbank, Calif.), to overpower No. 16 Texas A&M University and advance to a second round meeting with No. 1 California Polytechnic State University tomorrow at the 2010 National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by the University at Arizona.
The sets up another meeting between the Bruins and Mustangs as UCLA, which entered the tournament with an 18-1 record, will seek to avenge a 7-5 loss to Cal Poly in the Pacific Coast Division title game. Overall, UCLA is 2-1 against Cal Poly holding 6-3 and 9-6 victories from the regular season.
Against A&M, the Bruins scored early and often jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the first period before carrying an 8-4 lead into halftime.
The margin ballooned to 14-5 at the end of the third period as the Bruins outscored the Aggies 10-4 in the second half for the 10-goal win.
Wilson and Bonetti led the UCLA scoring effort, while Haley Canning (Jr., Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Adele Young (Jr., Long Beach, Calif.) added hat-tricks. Bre Sheldon (So., Laguna Nigel, Calif.), Jessica Ryder (So., San Diego, Calif.), Catrina Gallardo (Sr., Modesto, Calif.) and Sam Ellis (Jr., Sunnyvale, Calif.) tacked on solo markers as the Bruins rolled to their 19th victory of the season.For Texas A&M, Laura Peterson (Jr., Houston, Texas) and Rachel Edwards (Sr., Houston, Texas) contributed four and three goals, respectively, while Jana Havey (So., Houston, Texas) notched a solo score.
Erin Kasparek (Jr., Houston, Texas) made four saves for the Aggies in taking the loss, while Bari Cappaletti (Fr., Danville, Calif.) and Amanda Gittleman (So., San Diego, Calif.) notched one and two saves for the Bruins.
Texas A&M will next be in action at 9:50 p.m. this evening as the squad will meet the host and No. 15-ranked University of Arizona in the consolation bracket.
