Tiebreaker: No. 17 Middlebury Stops No. 17 Boston College 10-9 OT at National Collegiate Club Championship
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Sara Black (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) buried a shot on an exclusion chance with 33 seconds left in the second three-minute overtime period to give No. 17 Middlebury College a 10-9 OT victory over fellow No. 17 Boston College in the first consolation game of the 2010 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship.
Tied with the Eagles at No. 17 in the latest National Collegiate Club Poll, the victory places Middlebury into a consolation second round game at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 against the victor of a consolation bracket game between No. 16 Texas A&M University and No. 15 University of Arizona for a spot in the ninth place game. Boston College will take on the loser of the Texas A&M-vs.-Arizona game at 1:40 p.m. for a berth in the 13th place contest.
Trailing 7-6 entering the fourth period, the Panthers found a way to tie the game as Olivia Noble (Fr., Columbus, Ohio) zipped a shot past BC netminder Lia Breunig (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) to knot the game at 7-7 with 30 seconds left in regulation play.
The Eagles retook the lead to open overtime as Mary Keeley (Fr., Rockford, Mich.) found the back of the cage 46 seconds into the first of two three-minute overtime periods to go in front 8-7. Middlebury evened the game at 8-8 at the 1:53 mark with a marker by Colleen Carroll (So., Bainbridge Island, Wash.) before Carroll struck again 40 seconds later to put the Panthers ahead 9-8.
In the second OT frame, Lisa Stebbins (Jr., Portsmouth, N.H.) retied the game at 9-9 at the 2:32 mark before Black punched the Panthers' ticket to the next round with 33 seconds left before sudden death overtime.
Black led Middlebury in scoring with three goals, while Olivia Noble, Carroll and Amelia Noble (Jr., Columbus, Ohio) all added pairs to go along with a solo marker by Naomi Berkins (Jr., Oakland, Calif.).
For Boston College, Stebbins, Mackenzie Campbell (Jr., Foster City, Calif.) and Meghan Grimes (Jr., Walpole, Mass.) chipped in pairs of goals, while Debbie Hwang (Jr., Ann Arbor, Mich.), Meredith Behm (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif.) and Keeley all added single scores.
In cage, Breunig made 15 saves for the Eagles, while Kristen LaPlante (Sr., Suffield, Conn.) stopped 14 shots to earn the win for Middlebury.
