No. 11 Hartwick Escapes Maryland 13-12 OT in Eastern Championship First Round
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Jessica McKee (Jr., Tustin, Calif./Laguna Beach) made her sixth goal of the game count as she scored with 24 seconds left in overtime to give No. 11 Hartwick College a 13-12 victory against the University of Maryland in the first round of the 2010 Eastern Championship at Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center.
The game appeared to be over in the fourth period with the nationally-ranked Hawks nursing an 11-6 lead with 6:17 left until the final horn. However, the Terrapins came out of their shells and shelled Hartwick goalie Jessica Dorman (Jr., Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan) with seven shots, scoring on five of them, in the final five minutes of regulation to tie the game and bring on overtime.
In the extra period, Harwick jumped out to a one-goal lead when McKee pumped the ball and deposited a shot into the back of the cage on a man-up opportunity with 1:29 left in the first OT period. Allison Campbell (Fr., Maple Ridge, B.C./Maple Ridge Secondary) responded for the Terrapins with 39 seconds left in the extra three-minute frame with a power-play marker of her own, but McKee responded 15 seconds later with a blast for the game-winner.
Maryland was not able to overcome the goal and kept Hartwick from padding the margin over the final three-minute overtime period as the Hawks held off Maryland for the one-goal win.
The contest started tight and ended closer as the Hawks built a 3-2 lead in the first period and held at 6-3 advantage at halftime following three goals in the first period and three in the second.
Hartwick's lead ballooned to 8-4 with 6:00 left in the third period, but the Terrapins began to chip away at the deficit with a counter goal by Alex Gurnee (So., Newport Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) at 5:19 and a man-up score by Megan Powers (Jr., Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) at 4:10 to move Maryland to within 8-6.
Alyssa Analytis (So., Montreal, Quebec/Sacred Heart) gave the Hawks back a three-goal lead before the end of the period as she successfuly completed a sweep shot from two-meters to make it 9-6 and bring on the climatic fourth period.
Following a man-up score by Hanneke Alferink (Jr., Nijverdal, Netherlands/Univ. of Groningen) and a lob shot by McKee at 6:42 and 6:17, respectively, to make it an 11-6 game, the Terrpains went to work on the Hawks' defense.
Simone Lewis (Fr., Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan) went bar in from eight-meters out at 5:03, Elena Goldenberg (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) scored at 3:29, Campbell curved a shot into the netting on a man-up chance at 3:00 and Christine Goetsch (So., Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcus) slipped through the Hartwick defenders on a counter at 2:11 to move Maryland to within 11-10.
The most critical goal of the comeback bid came less than a minute later as Powers uncorked a sinking shot from the outside which sailed past Dorman and rocked the cage in the water for the game-tying tally to force overtime.
For Hartwick, Kirsten Hudson (Sr., Wellington, New Zealand/Sacred Heart) added four goals to rate as the only other Hawk among five scorers to tally more than a goal in the contest. Powers led Maryland with three goals, whiel Campbell joined Carly Hoshko (So., Coronado, Calif./Coronado) in registering pairs of markers.
Between the pipes, Dorman picked up the win making nine saves, while Shelby Reyes (So., Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) took the loss for Maryland with 14 stops.
Hartwick advances to face the winner of another first round game between No. 14 Indiana University and Brown University at Saturday, May 1 at 6:00 p.m. in the tournament semifinals. Maryland will take on the fallen from the Indiana-Brown game at 3:00 p.m. with a berth in the fifth place game on the line.
