Thompson Nets Six as Grove City Topples Chatham 16-6 at 2010 CWPA Division III Championship
UTICA, N.Y. -- Amanda Thompson (Sr., Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored six goals to earn Player of the Game honors, while Kate Stiebler (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) tacked on four more markers, as Grove City College rolled to a 16-6 victory over Chatham University at the 2010 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship at Utica College.
The Wolverines never trailed in the game and led 4-2 after one period of play before blowing the game open with a 5-0 outburst in the second period to carry a 9-2 lead into halftime.
For Chatham, the deficit was too much to overcome as Grove City added a pair of markers in the opening minutes of third period to lead 11-2 with 5:57 left on the clock. The Cougars were able to chip away at the margin as Selina Breiner (So., Moon Township, Pa./Moon) and Jenna Luek (Sr., Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored on a counter (1:14) and an outside shot (00:39), respectively, before Breiner converted a five-meter penalty shot with six seconds left in the period to pull to within 11-6.
However, the Wolverines slashed Chatham's comeback dreams in the opening minutes of the fourth period as Brittany LaPalme (Jr., Hollywood, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) scored a counterattack goal at 7:04 and Thompson tacked on back-to-back counter goals at 6:23 and 4:13 to highlight a 5-0 scoring run by Grove City to the final horn.
Overall, seven different Wolverines scored in the game as LaPalme finished with a pair of markers and four other players tallied single goals.
For Chatham, Breiner and Natty Burford (So. Temeculah, Calif./Temeculah) led the way with pairs of goals.
In cage, Allison Bodine (So., Frederick, Md./Urbana) made four saves for the Cougars, while Amanda Johnston (Fr., San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) picked up the win for Grove City with six stops.
