Bakanas Powers Connecticut Past Utica 14-8 at 2010 CWPA Division III Championship
UTICA, N.Y. -- Phoebe Bakanas (Sr., Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) put home four goals as Connecticut College posted 14 scores in knocking off host Utica College 14-8 at the 2010 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship. Kristin Lampley (Fr., Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) added a hat-trick for the Camels, while Amanda Sulicz (Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla./Lake Worth) led the Pioneers with four goals.
Connecticut never trailed in the game opening up a 3-0 lead midway through the first period as Bakanas connected on an outside shot (7:28), Lampley cashed in a man-up opportunity (6:15) and Emily Hunter (So., Cheshire, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) zipped a shot into the cage (3:07) to put the Camels in front to stay.
Following a score by Utica's Lisa Torri (So., Rosemont, Ill./St. Viator) to pull the Pioneers within two with 16 seconds left in the first period, Connecticut went on a 4-0 run to open the second period as Megan Wright (Fr., Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) scored twice off counters at 7:39 and 4:12, Bakanas drove to the cage for a goal at 5:33 and Lampley finished a pass at 2:19 to build the margin to 7-1. Utica chipped away at the lead in the closing minutes of the half as Sarah Parker (Fr., Dover, N.H./Dover) put back a rebound off the hands of Camels' goalie Pamela Lovejoy (Fr., Guilford, Conn./Hopkins School) with 1:56 on the clock before Kristin Galbraith (Jr., Ballston, N.Y./Ballston Spa) converted on a man-up chance exactly a minute later for a 7-3 score at the break.
The four-goal spread was too much for Utica to overcome as Connecticut kept pace with the Pioneers in the third period and outscored Utica 4-2 in the fourth to take the six-goal victory.
In cage, Lovejoy earned the victory with three saves, while Kera Langdon (Jr., Remsen, N.Y./Holland Patent) blocked down 16 shots for the Pioneers to earn Player of the Game honors.
