UIC's Michael Walsh defends Florida's Matt OriNo. 10 Florida Chomps on No. 15 Illinois-Chicago 9-5 to Finish 13th at National Collegiate Club Championship
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Jason Mammino (Fr., Winter Springs, Fla.) recorded a hat-trick to lead seven Florida scorers as the No. 10-ranked Gators defeated No. 15 Illinois-Chicago 9-5 to finish in a tie for 13th place at the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship at Florida. Illinois-Chicago finishes the tournament in a tie for 15th place.
Florida trailed only once in the game as UIC took a 3-2 lead with 1:52 left in the second period before Mammino recorded his second goal of the game to tie the game at 3-3 and ignite a seven-goal scoring run which lasted until midway through the fourth period.
Following halftime, the Gators took the retook the lead 33 seconds into the third period as Mammino completed his hat-trick with an exclusion goal to go ahead 4-3. Eisa al Nashmi (Gr., Kuwait) tacked on a natural goal at 5:07, Cody Smith (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) contributed a score at 3:33 and Kunal Patel (So., Deerfield, Fla.) put home a man-up goal at 2:15 to give Florida a 7-3 lead after three periods of play.
The margin expanded to six goals at 9-3 midway through the fourth period as Matt Sheehan (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) and Roberto Ferreiro (So., Hilea, Fla.) contributed goals at the 5:36 and 3:37 marks.
Illinois-Chicago's Andrew Peterson (Sr., Mundelein, Ill.) and Andrea Vaccari (Gr., Verona, Italy) closed out the scoring with even-strength (2:08) and man-up (:32) tallies, respectively, for the 9-5 final.
For the Flames, Tyler Rayome (Sr., Mundelein, Ill.) finished the game with three saves, while Peterson led the team on offense with a hat-trick.
The finish is Florida's sixth at National's over the last decade as the Gators finished eighth (2000), third (2001), 11th (2002), ninth (2003) and fourth (2008). in their prior trips to the tournament UIC previously finished 13th (2006) and seventh (2008) in two prior trips to the National Collegiate Club Championship.
