No. 1 UCLA Advances Past No. 19 Lindenwood 8-3 in National Collegiate Club Quarterfinals

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Max Scott (So., Glendale, Calif.), Matt Wiener (Sr., Los Altos, Calif.) and Jack Roney (So., Kailau, Hawaii) all scored pairs of goals as No. 1-nationally ranked University of California-Los Angeles used six consecutive goals spanning the first to third periods to overcome No. 19 Lindenwood University in the quarterfinals of the 2009 National Collegiate Club Tournament at Florida.

UCLA advances to a 6:20 p.m. semifinal game tonight where the Bruins will meet the winner of a quarterfinal between No. 4 University of Arizona and No. 7 University of Washington.  Lindenwood, which will not end its season with a national title for the first time in three years after capturing the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Division III National Collegiate Club Championships, will meet the loser of the Arizona-Washington game at 7:30 p.m. with a berth in the fifth place game at stake.

The Bruins never trailed in the contest as Scott scored with 5:06 left in the first period for a quick 1-0 lead.  Lindenwood tied the game at the 4:10 mark on a man-up goal by Mike Willar (Fr., Cape Town, South Africa), but UCLA went back in front with 3:42 left as Scott struck again with a blast from five meters out off an assist from Wiener to start a six-goal scoring run.  Caleb Greig (Jr., La Canada, Calif.) cushioned the lead with 21 seconds remaining in the first period with a man-up goal as the Bruins went ahead 3-1.

Eric Vallone (Sr., Palo Alto, Calif.) pushed the lead to four 46 seconds into the second period with a man-up goal at the 6:14 mark before Wiener tacked on his first score of the day with a cross-cage bar-in to make it 5-1 at halftime.

UCLA continued the onslaught in the third period as Roney and Wiener found the back of the net with 6:40 and 2:42 on the clock to make it 7-1 entering the fourth period and close out the six-goal streak by the Bruins.

Lindenwood tried to climb back into the game as Sharn Appel (Jr., Zimbabwe) and Marco Tschlenok (Fr., Berlin, Germany) registered scores at the 6:03 and 5:28 marks, respectively, of the fourth period.

However, UCLA's defense, lead and another insurance goal by Roney with 3:11 on the clock were too much to overcome in less than a period of play as UCLA rolled onto a semifinal date with either the Wildcats or Huskies.

In cage, Mike Scott (So., Glendale, Calif.) and Aaron Saule (Sr., Olathe, Kansas) earned the decisions with Scott picking up the win with five saves to Saule's six stops.
