GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Hunter Henderson (Sr., Dallas, Texas) earned Player of the Game honors for the University of Texas as the No. 11-nationally ranked Longhorns received 12 saves from the senior netminder to stun No. 2-ranked University of Utah.
Texas advances to the fifth place game in the tournament set for 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, November 15, while Utah will compete in the seventh place contest set for a 9:00 a.m. opening sprint.
The Longhorns never trailed in the game opening up a 2-0 lead in the first period before entering the second period with a 3-1 advantage. Utah came back to tie the game at 3-3 and 4-4 midway through the second period, but Texas' offense gave the Longhorns a lead and small cushion in the closing minutes of the period. Jackson Gould (Fr., Houston, Texas) registered an even-strength marker (2:52) and Matt Johnson (Jr., Houston, Texas) buried a penalty shot at 2:34 to put the Burnt Orange and White ahead 6-4 at the break.
Jason Chiang (Jr., Houston, Texas) added to the lead in the third period with a natural goal at the 1:31 mark to go ahead 7-4, but the Utes began a comeback bid 28 seconds later with a man-up score by Matt Clark (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) at the 1:03 mark to move Utah within 7-5.
Utah continued to climb out of a hole as Clark struck for another tally with 4:53 left in the fourth to shave the lead down to 7-6, but Bryan Byrnes (Jr., San Antonio, Texas) unleashed an advantage goal into the twine at 2:17 for the game-winner and Gould blasted an insurance marker into the cage at 1:54 for a 9-6 lead.
Brent Weldon (Sr., Park City, Utah) concluded the scoring with an exclusion goal with 24 seconds left on the clock for the 9-7 final.
For Utah, Sam Thomas (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah) finished with nine saves as the Utes are guaranteed to record their best ever finish at the National Collegiate Club Championship. In 2007, the Utes placed ninth in their only other appearance at Nationals.
Texas are also guaranteed of at least equaling their best ever finish at Nationals as the Longhorns previously finished sixth (2005), seventh (2007), 11th (2004) and 13th (2003) in four previous trips to collegiate club's penultimate event.
