GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Joe Dorsch (Sr., Souderton, Pa.) scored four times to lead six Hokies scorers as Virginia Tech rallied back from a 6-5 halftime deficit to defeat Georgia Tech University 12-7 in the consolation round of the National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Florida.
Trailing by a single score at the halftime break, the Hokies went to work in claiming their first lead of the game outscoring the Yellow Jackets 3-0 in the third period to take an 8-6 advantage before rattling off three more goals to take an 11-6 lead with 3:18 remaining in the fourth.
The three-goal run in the third was ignited by Dorsch who tied the score with a sweep shot from set with 5:40 left to play in the third period. Matt Sylvester (Fr., Philadelphia, Pa.) put Virginia Tech in front to stay with 4:05 remaining in the period courtesy a lob over the head and outstretched arms of Georgia Tech goalie Michael O'Rourke (Fr., Winter Springs, Fla.). Braxton Vinson (Jr., Arlington, Va.) closed out the three-goal spurt as he collected a cross pass and deposited the ball into the cage with 3:10 on the period clock for an 8-6 lead.
Needing a stop to climb back into the game, the Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech could not stop the bleeding as Dorsch launched in his fourth and final marker of the day at 5:49 before Brian Schmitt (Jr., Falls Church, Va.) bombed away from far outside for a pair of scores at the 4:14 and 3:18 marks to give the Hokies an unprecedented six goal lead in the game.
Georgia Tech attempted to design a comeback with 2:08 remaining in the waning moments of the game as Brian Twynham (Sr., Alpharetta, Ga.) notched his second goal of the day, but the VT defense and the six-goal outburst by the Hokies' offense over a nine-minute span was a burden too heavy to lift for victory.
Reeder Robinson (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) closed out the game's scoring with 54 seconds on the clock to add another insurance goal to the Virginia Tech tally and conclude the five-goal victory.
For Virginia Tech, Peter Biskaduros (Sr., Fairfax, Va.), Vinson and Schmitt added pairs of goals in support of Dorsch, while Chris Bauerlein (So., Miami, Fla.) keyed the Yellow Jackets with a hat-trick.
In addition, Steven Winton (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) and Steve Larson (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) chipped in single scores for Georgia Tech.
Between the pipes, O'Rourke stopped 13 shots for the Yellow Jackets, while Peter Ollis (So., Bethesda, Md.) made two saves for Virginia Tech.
The Hokies advance to face either No. 17 Penn State University or unranked University of Minnesota at 2:50 p.m. on Saturday, November 14 with a berth in the ninth place game on the line.
Georgia Tech will next be in action at 9:50 p.m. on the 14th versus the loser of a Penn State-Minnesota second round game as the Yellow Jackets will strive to finish in a tie for 13th in the final tournament standings.
The loser of the Ramblin' Wreck's next game will finish in a tie for 15th, while the winner will tie for 13th as the National Collegiate Club Championship format does not currently permit the final four positions in the standings to be played out due to pool availability and to maximize the amount of time teams have to return to campus and avoid missed classtime.
