Myre Scores Four, Alcalay & Quinn Add Pairs to Power NYU to Third Place at D3 National Collegiate Club Tournament
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Player of the Game David Myre (Gr., Mercer Island, Wash.) scored four goals while Morgan Alcalay (Sr., Sacramento, Calif.) and Markus Quinn (Sr., Somers, N.Y.) chipped in pairs of scores to give New York University all it would need to overcome Washington University (Mo.) in the 2009 Men's Division III National Collegiate Club Championship Third Place Game on the campus of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
It marks the first time NYU has finished third at the tournament after second (2004, 2005, 2008), fifth (2006), eighth (2002) and ninth (2003) placements in previous trips to D3 Nationals. For Washington, the finish is a first as the Bears had never qualified for the Division III Club National Championship in the program's history prior to this year.
In a nip-tuck game in which neither team was capable of building a lead greater than a single score, NYU came out on top thanks to a late run of goals by Myre and Alcalay.
Tied 5-5 at the end of the third period, the Bobcats gained the lead for the fourth time in the contest as Myre whipped in a shot from two-meters to push NYU out to a 6-5 advantage with 5:40 to play in the contest. Washington answered 64 seconds later on a counter-attack strike by Adam Gremp (West Hills, Calif.) to even the tallying at six-all, but Myre fired a shot into the upper corner of the cage to give NYU its fifth lead at 7-6 with 4:16 showing on the clock.
Needing a stop to hang on for the win, the Bobcats were unable to prevent Washington from avenging Myre's final tally of the day as Sandor Kovacs punched in a marker with 3:24 left to play to retie the game at seven-all and begin to bring on the apparition of overtime.
However, Alcalay put the possibility of overtime to rest with 67 seconds on the clock as he cashed in on a man-up situation with 1:07 left in the game to give NYU the 8-7 victory.
Overall, only six players scored in the game as Dan Conner (Singapore), Gremp and Kovacs accounted for three, two and two goals, respectively, to account for all of Washington's scoring.
In cage, Gleb Sidorkin (Gr., Novosibirsk, Russia) recorded six saves to pick up the victory for NYU, while Adam Webb (St. Louis, Mo.) swatted away 10 shots for the Bears.
