Bowdoin Manages Middlebury 9-6 to Advance to Fifth Place Game at Division III Club Championship

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Noah Perwin (So., Miami, Fla.) tallied four goals and Keith Heyde (Jr., Wilton, Conn.) added a pair of scores to power the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 9-6 victory over Middlebury College at the Division III Club Championship hosted by Bowdoin.

The win places the Polar Bears into the fifth place game on Sunday, November 8 at 9:00 a.m. against the winner of a second round game between Grinnell College and Grove City University, while the Panthers fall into the seventh place game against the loser of the Grinnell-Grove City game at 1:00 p.m.

Leading 3-2 after a period of play, the Polar Bears went to work against Middlebury in the second period running off three goals to open the period and take a 6-2 lead with 2:52 left in the first half.  The Panthers sliced the margin to a pair of markers as Patrick Burton (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) and Zach DeVore (Sr., West Bloomfield, Mass.) registered a natural goal and a man-up tally, respectively, to pull Middlebury to within 6-4.  However, Heyde struck for a score with 42 seconds remaining in the half to carry a three-goal advantage at 7-3 into the break.

Middlebury was unable to overcome the deficit pulling to within 7-5 at the 3:19 mark of the third period before Boomer Repko (Sr., New Canaan, Conn.) ripped an exclusion chance into the cage and Heyde slipped through the Panthers' defense for a shot-and-score five meters out to push the lead to 9-5 entering the fourth period.

The Panthers failed to pull closer than three goals the rest of the way as Burton beat Polar Bears' goalie Andrew Swafford (Jr., Los Gatos, Calif.) with a perimeter shot on an exclusion chance to set the final score at 9-6.

The story of the game was Middlebury's inability to convert on man-up chances as the Panthers converted on just three-of-10, while Bowdoin buried four-of-five into the cage on exclusion opportunities.

In cage, Swafford finished with five saves to pick up the victory for the Polar Bears, while Erik Shaw (So., La Canada, Calif.) and Ben Weinberg (So., Greenwich, Conn.) combined to register nine saves for Middlebury.
