Hilty Scores Four as Washington & Jefferson Holds Off PSU-Behrend 11-7 OT in Division III Eastern Opening Game

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior Steve Hilty (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) scored three of his four goals in overtime as Washington & Jefferson opened the 2009 Division III Eastern Men's Water Polo Championships with an 11-7 overtime victory over Penn State-Behrend on Saturday morning at the Henry Memorial Natatorium. 

The score was knotted 4-4 at halftime before the Lions (3-14) scored the only third-period goal to grab a 5-4 lead heading into the final eight minutes.  The Presidents (7-7) rattled off two goals late in the quarter, but Colin McGarry scored with 39 seconds remaining to force overtime. 

Hilty scored three times during a three-minute span between the two overtime periods to seal the win for W&J.

Senior goalie John Todd (Joppa, Md./Calvert Hall) finished the match with 15 saves, including six in the extra sessions.  

Sophomore Andy Rish (North East, Pa./Cathedral Prep) netted a game-high five goals for Washington & Jefferson, while freshmen Alex Shuey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Joey Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) both notched one goal. 

Penn State-Behrend was led by Alex Loukides' three-goal effort.  Ted Sopher and Jacob Bernstein combined for 11 saves in the cage for the Lions.
