Brown Sweeps Queens and Mercyhurst at Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. --  The Brown men's water polo team came back from two-goal deficits to beat Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division foe Queens College (16-10 W) and non-division foe Mercyhurst College (17-9 W) at Connecticut College to stake a claim to the top position in the Northern Division this year.

Against Queens, the Bears got off to a great start taking a 6-4 lead after the first two quarters and continued its stellar offense to outscore the Knights 12-4 in the second half. Leading the way was junior Gordon Hood (Carlsbad, Calif.) with six goals, while rookie Svetozar Stefanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) added five goals, two assists and three ejections drawn. Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles, Calif.) also turned in a solid three-goal performance, while senior captain Kent Holland (Orinda, Calif.) had five saves to lead the defense.

"We were able to dig ourselves out of some early trouble," said Head Coach Felix Mercado. "We still need to find our identity and be a little more consistent, but I am happy we came away with the wins before heading out to west for some tough games."

Against Mercyhurst, the Bears ended the first eight minutes of play tied 4-4 against the Lakers. But Bruno came out hot in the final three quarters, outscoring Mercyhurst 13-5, including a 5-0 run in the second to earn the win.

Seven different Bears scored in today's contest, as Hood continued his scoring streak with four goals.  A trio of Bears posted hat tricks in Cyrus Mojdehi (La Jolla, Calif.), Schwartz and Stefanovic, and Holland did a superb job in the cage posting 10 saves along with three assists and one steal to lead the defense.

Also adding goals were senior Zach Levko (Wildwood, Mo.) with two, and Dean Serure (Coral Gables, Fla.) and Ryan Gladych (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) with one each.
