No. 18 Bucknell Overcomes Johns Hopkins 13-8 in CWPA Southern Division
BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Bucknell University men's water polo team used a 6-1 run over the second and third quarters to take control of the match en route to a 13-8 win at Johns Hopkins Univeristy in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division-Eastern Region action. The loss drops the Blue Jays to 8-11 overall and 1-4 in the CWPA, while the Bison improve to 13-9 and 6-1 in the CWPA.
Trailing 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, Bucknell came out strong to start the second, with goals from Seah Coghlan and Richie Hayden to take a 4-3 lead as the Bison would not trail for the remainder of the match. Nick Barnett then pushed the Bison's lead to two at 5-3. Junior John Barrett (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Fenwick) cut the deficit to one with just eight seconds on the clock on a man-up goal for the Blue Jays.
Coming out of the half, Bucknell got three unanswered from Coghlan, Andrew Nelson and Johnny Stupp. The Blue Jays responded with a pair of goals from seniors Jamie Neuwirth (Ross, Calif./Phillips Andover (Mass.)) and Kyle Gertridge (Gunn Prep, Calif./Paolo Alto) to cut the deficit back to two at 8-6. But that's as close as Hopkins would get as Bucknell outscored JHU 5-2 in the final quarter.
Gertridge and Neuwirth paced the Blue Jays with a pair of goals each. Gertridge also had a pair of assists for JHU. Junior Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) was solid in the net for Hopkins once again, with a career-high 14 saves. Hayden and Nick Barnett led the Bison with a hat trick each, while Nick Donahue had 12 saves, including four each in the second and fourth quarters.
