Iona's Joe Przekota Named October 12 Varsity Northern Division Player of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Iona College senior Joe Przekota (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Patrick's) scored eight goals, handed out nine assists, drew 12 kickouts and blocked three shots in a 2-1 weekend to lead the Gaels to first place in the Northern Division standings and earn the October 12 Northern Division Player of the Week award.
The award marks the first time an Iona player has been honored by the league as the Northern Division Player of the Week since Nick Velasquez garnered the honor on November 10, 2008. In addition, it marks Przekota's second Player of the Week nod in a year as he earned the honor on October 6, 2008.
Facing Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University and Harvard University on the road last week, he helped the Gales stake a claim as the best team in the Northern Division by defeating the Bears and Crimson, while falling to the Engineers, last week.
Against MIT, he chipped in an assist, two steals and a kickout drawn as the Engineers downed the Gaels 9-6.
He helped Iona rebound against Brown at MIT by tallying three goals, four assists, six kickouts drawn and two field blocks in a 10-9 come-from-behind victory over the Bears. His most important play came with four seconds to go on the game-clock as he drew a five-meter penalty which Trevor Creighton (So., Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park) buried to give the Gaels the one-goal victory.
Versus Harvard, he tacked on five goals, three assists, five kickouts drawn and a field block in a 14-11 victory in Cambridge as Iona moved to 3-1 in the division.
If the Gaels can defeat Connecticut College (October 16) and Fordham University (October 28), Iona will claim the Northern Division regular season championship and earn the No. 1 seed for the division championship tournament on November 7-8 at Harvard University.
