Last-Second Goal Lifts No. 18 Bucknell to 12-11 Victory Over No. 10 Navy

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Beau Caillouette (So., Newport Beach, Calif./Sage Hill School) scored his only goal of the game with one second remaining in regulation, lifting the Bucknell men's water polo team to a thrilling 12-11 victory over No. 10 Navy on the afternoon of October 3 in front of another large crowd at Kinney Natatorium. The victory snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Mids and was the first win over a top-10 opponent in recent memory for the Bison.

Bucknell (10-5, 4-0 CWPA Southern Division) had not defeated the Mids since 2004. The Bison, who improved to 3-5 against ranked foes this season, have now won six games in a row, including four straight at home against league opponents.

It was a close game throughout, although Bucknell had to battle back from an early three goal (4-1) deficit. The Bison led by two goals on two occasions in the final quarter of play, but relinquished their lead each time.

Caillouette's goal came following an empty Navy possession in the final minute. Bison head coach John Abdou called a timeout with 15 seconds left to draw up a play. Shortly after play resumed, Sean Coghlan (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) drew an ejection and Caillouette followed with the game-winning goal in a six-on-five situation. It was the sixth goal of the year for the sophomore.

Spencer Richley (So., Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Howie Kalter (Jr., Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) led the Bison offense with three goals apiece, while six others chipped in one goal. Kalter has now netted at least one score in 28 consecutive games, while Richley's output was a new career high.

Goalkeeper Nick Donahue (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) posted double-figure saves for the third time in his last four outings, registering 10. He also contributed one of Bucknell's two steals.

Navy's loss snapped its four-game winning streak and dropped it to 9-5, 1-1 CWPA this season.

The Bison will now head on the road to play another ranked league team in No. 19 Princeton. Bucknell, which is ranked No. 18 nationally, defeated the Tigers 11-10 last Saturday at Kinney Natatorium.
