Shana Welch '07 Listed Among Michigan's Best from Pennsylvania
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Shana Welch '07 is listed among the honorable mentions for the state of Pennsylvania as the University of Michigan is compiling Leaders and Best in 50 States, a comprehensive list of the best athletes to wear the Maize & Blue from each of the 50 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
Welch, one of the most honored players in Michigan water polo history, was named to the American Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA) All-America team on three occasions and was a three-time Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division MVP. In addition, she earned four Western Division first-team selections and three CWPA Eastern Championship first team-honors.
The most prolific offensive player in program history, she holds the game, season and career goals and points records. Her 297 career goals and 394 career points stand far-and-away above the rest of the leaders in program history. She netted 59 hat tricks in her career, including a pair of 15-trick seasons.
She served as captain of the Wolverines in her junior and senior seasons and was the recipient of the Michigan Athletic Academic Achievement Award in 2006 and 2007, as well as the Bob Ufer Senior Athlete Award in 2007. Welch was tabbed the CWPA Rookie of the Year in 2005 and was a USA Speedo Top 40 in 2005 and 2006.
In January 2010, Welch was honored on the the University of Michigan All-Decade team, grabbing a spot on the squad as a driver.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Michigan in 2007, Welch played professional water polo for the UWA Perth Comets in Australia for one year.
Currently an assistant coach on the
water polo staff of Harvard University, sheh arrived in Cambridge
after serving as the assistant coach of men’s and
women’s swimming at Bucknell Univeristy for one season.
She began her coaching career as a strength and conditioning
intern at Michigan in 2008.
