Brown's Kent Holland Named First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Brown University goalie Kent Holland (Sr., Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District  I University Division At-Large First Team.  He will now go on the ballot for national Academic All-America honors. The ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Team is due to be announced on June 8.

The District I region includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Quebec. Only athletes named to the first team qualify for the national ballot. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.

The At-Large Team is comprised of male athletes in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling to mark the largest Academic All-America division in the program.

A Second Team All-East selection and First Team All-North honoree, Holland saw action in 29 games and earned a 15-12 overall record in helping the Bears to the 2009 Northern Division Championship, the Bears first since 1993. He had a 8.94 goals-against average and recorded 231 saves for a .513 save percentage. His 9.43 saves per game ranked 11th in the country, and he currently holds the Brown record for saves in a season (290 in 2008) and also in a career (946). He also received Academic All-Ivy honors in the fall and was recognized with Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America honorable mention notice.

Holland will graduate later this month with a degree in Commerce, Organizations and Entrepeneurship and held a 3.83 GPA at the time of his nomination.

Overall, he is one of four CWPA male varsity athletes named to the team as Harvard University's Egen Atkinson was named to the University Division District I Second Team, while Johns Hopkins University goalie Jeremy Selbst was recognized on the College Division District II First Team.  The United States Naval Academy's Luke Baldwin picked up University Division District II Second Team accolades.

The four selections mark the most garnered by either a men's or women's water polo conference in a single year establishing a new bar for the CWPA, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and Western Water Polo Association (WWPA).
