Harvard's Egen Atkinson Named Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Harvard University's Egen Atkinson (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii./Iolani School) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I University Division At-Large Second Team.
The District I region includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Quebec. Only athletes named to the first team qualify for the national ballot. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
The At-Large Team is comprised of male athletes in fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling to mark the largest Academic All-America division in the program.
A team captain, Atkinson was tabbed to the Academic All-Ivy League team last fall. A four-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Scholar-Athlete and three-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Association (ACWPC) All-Academic pick, he scored 28 goals during his senior campaign, including 10 multiple-goal efforts, following a 2008 season in which he earned Harvard’s Most Improved Player award.
Overall, he is one of four CWPA male varsity athletes named to the team as Brown University goalie Kent Holland was named to the University Division District I First Team, while the United States Naval Academy's Luke Baldwin was recognized on the University Division District I Second Team. Johns Hopkins University goalie Jeremy Selbst picked up College Division District II First Team accolades.
The four selections mark the most garnered by either a men's or women's water polo conference in a single year establishing a new bar for the CWPA, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and Western Water Polo Association (WWPA).
