Michigan's Alex Adamson Named May 3 Women's Varsity Western Division Rookie of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- University of Michigan goalie Alex Adamson (Fr., ) made 20 saves in victories over Harvard University, Princeton University and No. 14-ranked Indiana University to earn the May 3 Women's Varsity Western Division Rookie of the Week award as the No. 7-ranked Wolverines claimed their third consecutive Eastern Championship.
The award marks the fifth-time Adamson has received recognition from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) league office as she previously took home the February 22, March 8 and April 19 Rookie of the Week awards, along with the April 5 Defensive Player of the Week accolade.
She recorded nine saves in an 18-10 opening-round victory over Harvard University before posting three stops in a 12-8 win against Princeton University in the semifinals. In the title game, Adamson posted eight stops as the Wolverines rolled to a 7-5 victory and the program's third consecutive league title.
She joins CWPA Hall of Fame member Betsey Armstrong (2002) and teammate Brittany May (Sr., Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) (2005) as freshmen goalies to lead the Wolverines to an Eastern title.
The performance raised her season and career totals to 138 saves with 103 goals allowed, 30 assists and 15 steals in 25 games for a 16-1 record, 5.84 goals against average and .573 save percentage.
Adamson and the Wolverines will continue the season on May 14-16 at San Diego State University for the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship. Michigan, which will compete as the No. 5 seed in the eight-team field, will take on the University of California in the first round on May 14.
