Brown's Stephanie Laing Named April 19 Women's Varsity Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Brown University's Stephanie Laing (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) tallied 46 saves in three games for an average of 15.33 saves per game last week to help the Bears clinch a berth in the 2010 Eastern Championship field and earn the April 19 Women's Varsity Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week award.

The award marks her sixth Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week nod and the ninth weekly award from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) in her career.  A three-time Northern Division Player of the Week (February 16 & April 27, 2009; March 19, 2007), she previously garnered the Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week award on February 22, March 1, March 8, March 29 and April 5.

In a 1-2 week for the Bears, she a school-record with 24 saves in a 7-6 overtime loss at Harvard University before stopping 16 shots in a 12-9 overtime loss to Hartwick College.  Her most influential performance of the week came when she was called on to record the fewest saves as she made six stops in a 14-10 victory over Harvard at Wheaton College to clinch the runner-up spot and the second-of-two automatic berths from the Northern Division to the 2010 Eastern Championship at the University of Maryland.
