No. 15 Indiana Shocks No. 14 San Diego State 11-7

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The No. 15 Indiana University Hoosiers (18-8) used a ferocious six-goal run in the opening five minutes to stun No. 14 San Diego State University as the Hoosiers went on to capture the 11-7 victory in Tempe, Ariz.  Indiana led by as many as seven on two occasions during their third victory this season over a Varsity Top 20 opponent.

"We really played with a lot of passion and toughness for 32 minutes," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "It's nice to get rewarded for the effort with a win against a quality team."

Lauren Wyckoff led the charge for the Indiana with four goals, including three during the first quarter flurry.  Jakie Köhli scored three goals, which marks her 15th hat trick of the season.  Katie Black, Hanna Eimstad, Kym King and Nicole Redder added one score apiece for the Hoosiers.

The Hoosiers received a pair of solid performances in the cage from Katie Carson and Cassie Wyckoff. Carson came on in the second half to record 10 saves on 18 SDSU shot attempts. Wyckoff started the game and made four stops on 11 shots, to go along with a pair of steals.

Köhli got the Hoosiers on the board quickly with a long-range score 19 seconds into the action after an assist by Lauren Wyckoff. Wyckoff added a goal less than a minute later, as she tapped in a shot in after Redder drew an ordinary foul and dished it off near the cage. Wyckoff then scored on a breakaway 37 seconds later to give Indiana a 3-0 lead at the 6:17 mark of the opening period.

Indiana remained relentless throughout the rest of the quarter. Eimstad fired in a shot from deep after an assist by Kelly Palmberg with 5:46 to go in the first. Palmberg would follow up with another assist, this time to Wyckoff, who scored on a nifty backhand that found the upper-right corner of the net. Redder completed the six-goal barrage after she spun past the Aztec defender and scored after an assist by Black.

SDSU got on the board late in the first period on a skip shot to end the quarter trailing the Hoosiers 6-1.

Indiana's stifling defense halted the Aztecs during the second period, as the Hoosiers shut out SDSU in that frame. Köhli added her second goal of the contest at the 5:26 mark, after Wyckoff dished out her second assist of the game. It marks the 12th time this season that Wyckoff has recorded two or more assists. The Hoosiers scored their eighth goal of the half late in the period after Kara Butler kicked it out of the post to an open King, who converted the fourth goal of her freshman campaign to give Indiana the 8-1 halftime lead.

The Aztecs opened the third quarter with a power play goal at the 5:03 mark, quickly followed by a Köhli goal during a six-on-five opportunity to make it a 9-2 Indiana advantage. The Aztecs ended the period with another power play goal, followed by a five-meter penalty score.

Black nailed a skip shot 37 seconds into the fourth quarter after a cross by Köhli during a power play to give Indiana a 10-4 lead. The Hoosiers converted on three out of six power play chances in the contest.

The Aztecs followed up with two goals of their own to pull within four with 5:15 to play, but Wyckoff responded by pump-faking the defense and scoring her fourth goal after Campbell dished it off for her second assist of the game. SDSU tacked on a goal with just over a minute left to make the final score 11-7 in favor of the Hoosiers.
