Defending Champion Cal Poly Returns to No. 1 in April 15 Women's National Club Poll

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- California Polytechnic State University returns to the top spot in the Women's National Collegiate Club Top 20 Poll for the first time since the preseason balloting as the Mustangs garnered 100 points to rank as a unanimous top pick in the April 15 Poll released by the Collegiate Water Polo Association league office.

Cal Poly, which joins the University of California-Los Angeles and the University of Notre Dame as the only teams to rank at No. 1 this season, returns to the top spot on the heels of defeating former No. 1 UCLA in the Pacific Coast Division Championship over the weekend.

UCLA slips to No. 2 this week, while Midwest Division champion Notre Dame improves to No. 3.  Big Ten Division champion the University of Michigan, Sierra Pacific Division champion the University of California-Santa Cruz, Northwest Division the University of Oregon, Mid-Atlantic Division champion the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California-Davis, Grand Valley State University and Michigan State University round out the Top 10 for holding the No. 4-10 slots.

The University of California-Berkeley, Southwest Division champion the University of Utah, the University of Colorado, the University of California-San Diego and Texas Division champion Texas A&M University rank No. 11-15, while the University of Arizona, New England Division champion Boston College, Southeast Division champion the University of Central Florida, North Atlantic Division champion Middlebury College and San Diego State University round out the Top 20.

Overall, 19-of-20 teams ranked in the April 8 Poll remain in the national rankings, while Texas A&M, which did not receive a vote in last week's poll, garnered 26 points this week to rate as the lone newcomer to the rankings.

The penultimate decision on the No. 1 team in the country will come in eight days as the 2010 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship featuring Cal Poly, Notre Dame, Oregon, Penn, UC-Santa Cruz, Utah, Michigan, Texas A&M, UCLA, Grand Valley State, Central Florida, Middlebury, Boston College, Heartland Division champion Illinois State University, New York Division champion New York University and Arizona will occur on April 23-25 in Tucson at the University of Arizona.
