Gannon Rolls to 15-0 Victory over PSU-Behrend
ERIE, Pa.- The
Gannon University women’s water polo team defeated Penn State
University-Behrend 15-0 in its 2010 home opener Wednesday night at
the Carneval Athletic Pavilion (CAP). The shutout is the first for
the Lady Knights since March 5, 2009, and the fifth in program
history.
GU (4-13, 1-1 CWPA) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one quarter, as
Sarah Anderson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored twice
to lead the attack. In the second period, the Knights added seven
more scores by seven different players. Gannon tacked on a single
goal in both the third and fourth quarters to create the final
margin.
Anderson posted a hat trick, while Colleen Harriger (Erie,
Pa./McDowell) and Kelly Steininger (Vernon Hills,
Ill./Vernon Hills) each scored two goals. Molly
Andrews (Tustin, Calif./Tustin), Mallery Casale
(Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), Caitlin Andrews
(Tustin, Calif./Tustin), Liz Clary (Canton,
Ohio/Glen Oak), Annie Greenhill (Brea, Calif./Brea
Olinda), Kendra Plackemeier (Bonsall,
Calif./Fallbrook), Laurel Martinez (Pittsburgh,
Pa./Keystone Oaks) and Stephanie Komorek (Erie,
Pa./McDowell) each scored once.
Janelle Bartman (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson)
made two saves and Libbie Guina (Houston, Texas/Clear
Brook) posted one in net.
The Knights’ last shutout came last season at Cal Tech, as
GU won 14-0 in California.
