No. 11 UC-Santa Barbara Overpowers Bucknell 8-3

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – For the second time in a six-hour span the Bucknell University women’s water polo team was involved in an 8-3 game. However, after defeating California State University-San Bernardino 8-3 earlier in the day, the Bison lost to No. 11 University of California-Santa Barbara Sunday evening to complete the first competition day of their Spring Break trip to California. Bucknell is now 7-6 on the season with four of the losses coming to nationally ranked opponents.

After registering 15 steals and yielding a season-low three goals to UC-San Bernardino, Bucknell continued its strong defense, holding the high-scoring Gauchos to eight goals. Alison Carter (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) was key to the defensive performance with 13 saves and a season-high five steals. She now has eight double-figure save outings in 13 games this year.

Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho) contributed to the defensive effort as well with three steals. She also drew three ejections and was one of a trio of Bison to net one goal. Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and Krystle Morgan (Rowland Heights, Calif./Rosary) also found the back of the net, while Amanda Skonezney (Mechancisburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) and Kennan dished out assists.

The Bison trailed 3-1 at the end of the first quarter and never got closer as UC-Santa Barbara outscored Bucknell in every quarter. However, the Bison, who never scored more than one goal in a period, were never outscored by more than two goals in any eight-minute stretch.

UC-Santa Barbara shut down the Bucknell offensive attack as the Bison score on only three of their 30 shot attempts.
