Carthage Upends No. 8 Washington & Jefferson 10-4 in CWPA Division III Competition
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Three Lady Reds collected hat tricks as Carthage College (Wisc.) earned a 10-4 women's water polo victory over No. 8-nationally ranked Washington & Jefferson College on Sunday, March 7 at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.
Patti Blatter, Kimmy Genian and Michele Mulhall all totaled three goals for the Lady Reds (4-2).
Senior Katie Silvestri (Kingsville, Md./McDonogh) and junior Caitlin Brown (Milford, Ohio/Milford) both fired home goals in the first quarter as W&J played Carthage to a 2-2 tie.
The Lady Reds went back on top midway through the second quarter, but junior Katie Wieber's (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen) goal at the 3:08 mark evened the game. Genian struck 28 seconds before halftime and the Lady Reds led 4-3 after 16 minutes.
Carthage, which is coached by 2006 W&J graduate and former water polo player Sarah Denny, increased its advantage to 6-4 at the end of the third quarter and then scored all four goals in the final period to run away with the win.
LaChee Singleton (5) and Jen Pasciak (3) combined to make eight saves in goal for the Lady Reds.
Senior Jessica Barby (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) scored W&J's only goal in the second half. Wieber, Barby and senior Erica Harpur (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) all notched one assist.
Senior goalie Polly Ziegler (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) finished with six saves in the setback for the Presidents.
