No. 5 Michigan Wolverines Mow Down Siena & Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan water polo team easily handled Siena College, 15-3, and California Lutheran University, 11-4, on Friday afternoon at the Cal Lutheran's Samuelson Aquatics Center.

Senior Casie Kelly (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) and junior Keller Felt (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) each had a hat trick on the day, joining junior Lauren Orth (Poway, Calif./Poway) with four goals on the afternoon. Junior Alison Mantel (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) racked up five helpers for a seven-point day and junior Ryley Plunkett (Modesto, Calif./Johansen) recorded six thefts between the two games.

Fifth-year senior Brittany May (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) returned to the lineup and made eight saves in the cage over three periods for her 49th career victory in the game against Siena. Sophomore Morgan Turner (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) got the victory in the second game, making five saves in 16 minutes of action, while freshman Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) came off the bench in both games, making six saves overall.

Sophomore Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) got the Wolverines started with the 50th goal of her career in the contest against Siena. After the Saints leveled the score at 1-1 two minutes later, the Wolverines went on a 12-goal run that carried them into the middle of the fourth period with a 13-1 lead. Siena scored a pair in the final frame, with each score answered by markers from Kelly, who had three in the match, to maintain the 12-goal advantage.

Taking on the host Regals, Michigan built two-goal leads after each of the first two periods, winding up 4-2 at the break. Felt broke the game open with a hat trick all within the confines of the third period, helping the Wolverines build a 10-3 lead by the end of the third period. The teams exchanged goals in the final stanza, with freshman Mia Butera (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) scoring her second of the contest to cap the 11-4 victory.

Michigan will face No. 13-ranked San Diego State on Saturday (Feb. 27) at 12:45 p.m. PST for the first game of the UC Irvine Invitational (Sat-Sun., Feb. 27-28) at Corona Del Mar High School in Irvine, Calif.
