No. 16 Indiana University Edged 10-9 by No. 17 California Baptist University

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 16 Indiana University Hoosiers (1-4, 0-0 CWPA West) lost their second straight contest to a ranked opponent at the Triton Invitational on Saturday evening in La Jolla, Calif., falling to No. 17 California Baptist University 10-9. The Hoosiers fell behind 4-1 early in the second quarter, and could not complete the comeback, despite a career-high five goals from Jakie Köhli and strong play in the cage from Katie Carson.

"It's definitely a disappointing loss," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We can't afford to get behind early and expect to win games."

Köhli scored the first goal of the contest on one of her four converted five-meter penalty shots after Kara Butler earned the foul. Cal Baptist came back with three goals in the remainder of the first period to take a 3-1 lead.

The Lancers continued to put the pressure on early in the second quarter by scoring on a power play after putting back their second missed shot of the possession to extend their lead to three. Carson stepped up to make a save on a one on one opportunity for CBU to help give the Hoosiers momentum. The stop was one of 10 first half saves for Carson, who finished the game with 14. Köhli followed it up with two consecutive goals in the next minute of action to pull within one with under three minutes to play in the half. CBU halted that change of momentum with a pair of goals before the break to take a 6-3 lead.

Following a quick CBU score to start the second half, Indiana mounted a charge led by two successful five meter penalty shots by Köhli. Butler then made one of her two steals and took it the distance for the score to make it a 7-6 Lancer advantage. The comeback took a tough turn when CBU fired in a goal with less than one second left in the quarter to make it 8-6.

The fourth quarter featured a pair of Lauren Wyckoff goals, as well as a score by Kelsey Campbell to knot things up at 9-9 with three minutes to play. However the Lancers capitalized late in the game, scoring on a post-up with less than two minutes left and the Hoosiers could not recover.
