Johns Hopkins Places Three on ACWPC All-America Teams

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Johns Hopkins University men's water polo team placed three on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America teams. Senior Kyle Gertridge (Gunn Prep, Calif./Paolo Alto) earned first team honors, while junior Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and freshman Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) were named to the second team. Johns Hopkins has now produced 37 ACWPC All-America selections since 1992, including 20 first team selections.

Gertridge earns All-America honors for the second straight season after being named to the honorable mention team as a junior. He led the Blue Jays in goals (67), assists (43) and points (110), while ranking second in steals (50) and five-meter goals (8). He also drew 25 ejections. Gertridge ranked 13th in the nation, among all divisions, in goals scored. His 67 goals are also tied for 10th most in a single-season in JHU history. Gertridge finished his career with 156 goals, good for eighth in program history. He also earned Second Team All-South and First Team All-East honors from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) this season.

Whittam had a breakout season in his rookie campaign with the Blue Jays, scoring 52 goals and adding 25 assists for 77 points. His 52 goals were second on the team behind Gertridge and are the second most in program history by a freshman. He led the team in ejections drawn (70) and five-meter goals (9) and ranked second in points and blocks (13) and fourth in steals (43). Whittam was named the CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Year, as well as First Team All-South. He is just the fifth freshman in program history to earn All-America honors and the third to garner second team accolades. He is also one of just four freshmen out of the 28 named to the All-America teams and is the only freshman that earned second team honors.

Selbst started all but two games in goal for Johns Hopkins this season and finished the season ranked fourth in the nation, among all divisions, in saves with 289. He also notched 16 assists, while leading the team in steals (90). He is just the fourth goalie in program history to earn All-America honors. In addition, this marks the second straight season that Johns Hopkins has produced an All-America goalie (Chris Hutchens-2008). He was named to the DIII Eastern All-Tournament First Team, along with Gertridge and Whittam, after helping JHU win its 12th DIII Eastern title.
