No. 3 UCLA Escapes 12-6 Versus No. 19 Indiana at Michigan Kick-Off Tournament

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 19 Indiana Hoosiers water polo team gave No. 3 UCLA all they could handle during the first half of their season opening match at the Michigan Kick-Off, but a three goal flurry late in the third period was too much as the Hoosiers fell 12-6.

Jakie Köhli led the scoring attack for Indiana and tied a career-high with three goals, each coming in the second half. Katie Carson played a complete game in the cage and finished with nine saves on 28 UCLA shot attempts.

UCLA took the early lead with a goal one minute into the action. Lauren Wyckoff struck back for Indiana with a strike from long range, quickly followed by a score from Katie Black to give the Hoosiers their only lead of the game at 2-1. It was the first career Hoosier goal for Black, a transfer from Fairfield, Calif.

UCLA would answer with two goals from Priscilla Orozco on a penalty shot and a post-up to take a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter. The second period was a defensive clash as neither team could connect until the Bruins scored with 1:13 left to play in the half to give them a 4-2 lead.

After a UCLA goal two minutes into the second half, Köhli nailed in a skip shot to give Indiana their only score of the third quarter. The Hoosiers played most of the second half without Wyckoff, the team's leading returning scorer, after she picked up her third exclusion midway through the third period.

UCLA then went on a key run with three goals during the final three minutes of the period to extend their lead to 8-3 heading into the last stanza.

The fourth period turned into a scoring duel between Köhli and Grace Reynolds of UCLA. Reynolds fired in three in the quarter and four for the contest. Köhli scored her first goal in the third, followed by a pair in the final quarter. Köhli's final goal came on a penalty shot after Nicole Redder worked to earn the five meter penalty. Redder also finished the game with a team-high two steals.

Freshman Jenna Lee Tameris converted her first collegiate goal late in the game when she scored on a six-on-five opportunity after an assist from Hanna Eimstad.
