Princeton, USC & Redlands Remain No. 1 in Oct. 15 Men's Varsity Polls

October 15, 2008

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Southern California, Princeton University and the University of Redlands remain No. 1 for another week as the National Varsity Top 20, Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10 and Division III Top 10 polls were released by the Collegiate Water Polo Association league office.

In the Varsity Top 20 poll, USC held onto the top spot for another week after claiming the No. 1 ranking three weeks ago for the first time since November 28 of 2007. Like last week, the Trojans garnered 100 points and were a unanimous choice as the top team in the nation.

Unlike last week in which the top six teams in the nation remained the same, the status quo did not last for 14 days as Stanford University climbed one spot to No. 2 after knocking off Princeton University (12-4 W), Loyola Marymount University (10-8 W) and former No. 2 the University of California-Los Angeles (7-4 W).  Former No. 1 the University of California-Berkeley also knocked off UCLA last week, downing the Bruins 12-11 in overtime ,and used victories over Saint Francis College (N.Y.) (11-5 W) and Pepperdine University (8-6 W) to solidify a jump to No. 3 in the poll after ranking fifth in the October 8 poll.

UCLA and Pepperdine slipped to fourth and fifth, respectively, while Loyola Marymount University held firm at No. 6 to join USC and No. 10 Long Beach State University as the only teams in the Top 10 to retain their rankings from a week ago.

The University of California-San Diego climbed two places to No. 7 this week as the team knocked off the University of California-Santa Barbara (12-11 W), while UC-Santa Barbara slipped only one place to eighth by holding off new No. 9 the University of California-Irvine (11-10 W) to round out the Top 10 with Long Beach State.

Positions No. 11-16 in the poll also experienced dramatic changes as the University of California-Davis moved up to 11th, Princeton University climbed to 12th, Santa Clara University slipped to 13th, Saint Francis College (N.Y.) pushed at fourteenth, the University of Redlands jumped to fifteenth and the University of Redlands slipped to sixteenth.

The final four positions in the poll stayed the same from the October 8 balloting as the United States Naval Academy, Brown University, the United States Air Force Academy and California Baptist University held at No. 17 through 20, respectively.

Princeton University held onto the No. 1 ranking for a third week in the October 15 Collegiate Water Polo Association Poll after taking over the top spot in the October 1 poll.

A unanimous No. 1 selection, the Tigers are followed by Brown University, Saint Francis College (N.Y.), the United States Naval Academy and Bucknell University in the top five.  Brown, which ranked third a week ago, climbed past Saint Francis for the No. 2 spot by a vote after clinching the Northern Division regular season title over the weekend.  The No. 2-4 spots are tight as Brown, Saint Francis and Navy are separated by only two points.

Johns Hopkins University and George Washington University held firm at No. 6 and 7, respectively, while Iona College surpassed Mercyhurst College to take possession of eighth place.  Massachusetts Institute of Technology rounds out the Top 10 as the Engineers climbed up from the "receiving votes" category in the October 8 poll to take hold of 10th place.
