Bucknell Overcomes Johns Hopkins 12-6 in Eastern Championship Fifth Place Game
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Richie Hyden (So., Melbourne, Australia) scored three goals and Nick Donahue (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) stopped six shots to lead Bucknell University to a 12-6 win over Johns Hopkins University in the fifth place game at the 2008 Eastern Championship hosted by the United States Naval Academy at LeJeune Hall.
The Bison never trailed in the game building a 5-2 lead by halftime and outscoring the Blue Jays 7-4 in the second half as Bucknell finishes the season 17-16.
Overall, the Bison received scoring from seven players, including pairs of scores by Howie Kalter (So., Durham, N.H.), Andrew Nelson (Jr., Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Alex Lampley (Sr., Reading, Pa.).
The game was all Bucknell in the first half as Randy Ang (Jr., Hillsborough, Calif.) and Hyden scored with 43 and 15 seconds left in the first period, respectively, to give the Bison a 2-0 lead through eight minutes of play.
Hopkins halved the margin 25 seconds into the second period with a score by Josh Kratz (Sr., Lansdale, Pa.), but the Bison sandwiched a natural goal by Sean Coghlan (So., Chicago, Ill.) at 1:38 and an exclusion marker by Kalter at the two seconds mark around an exclusion score by Kratz with 49 seconds remaining in the half to put Bucknell in front 5-2 at the break.
The lead ballooned to 7-2 in the first 3:03 of play in the third period as Gabriel Heiber (Sr., Caracas, Venezuela) and Nelson buried penalty shots at 7:07 and 4:57, respectively. However, Hopkins was able to shave the margin down to 8-5 by the end of the third period courtesy an exclusion goal by Kratz at 4:05, and even-strength tallies by M.G. Gonzalez (Jr., Calasabb, Calif.) and Reid Fox (Jr., Harleysville, Pa.) at 2:07 and 0.6 seconds to appear primed for a dramatic comeback.
The rally would not come to fruition as the Bison dropped four goals on the Blue Jays before Hopkins responded to push the margin out to 12-5. Hyden started the spurt with a tally at 5:27, Lampley followed with a score at 3:57, Hyden completed a hat-trick at 2:38 with a successful penalty shot and Lampley closed out his team's scoring with a marker at 1:25.
Hopkins could only manage to add a score by Bennett Givens (So., Pasadena, Calif.) with 55 seconds remaining on the game clock as Bucknell finishes 3-1 against Hopkins this year with 13-9 and 10-3 wins and an 8-4 loss in the third place game of the Southern Division Championship.
In goal, Chris Hutchens (Sr., Granite Bay, Calif.) made seven saves for Hopkins as the Blue Jays complete the season 14-17.
