By George: Georgakakos Scores Four as Tufts Stops Carnegie Mellon 20-5 at Division III Club Championship
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Player of the Game Peter Georgakakos (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) and Ben Mitchell (Sr., Normandy Park, Wash.) both scored four goals to lead Tufts University to a 20-5 victory over Carnegie Mellon University in the opening round of the 2008 Division III National Collegiate Club Championship at Villanova University.
Tufts, which will face Lindenwood University at 5:15 p.m. in the semifinals, built a 9-0 lead in the first period thanks to hat-tricks by Georgakakos and Benji Koltai (Fr., Beverly Hills, Calif.) and never looked back.
Leading 11-1 at halftime, the Jumbos saw their lead trimmed to eight goals at 12-4 with 2:10 left in the third period, but Tufts turned it on down the stretch rattlingthe cage with six goals to push the margin to 20-4 before Carnegie Mellon tacked on a goal with six seconds left on the game clock.
Overall, 10 Jumbos found the back of the cage in the game, including pairs of goals by Matt Murphy (Sr., Chelmsford, Mass.) and Alex de Castro-Abeger (So., North Hollywood, Calif.), while five different Tartans scored for Carnegie Mellon.
Carnegie Mellon will continue the tournament at 4:00 p.m. versus Grinnell College, which fell to Lindenwood 23-7 in the opening game of the tournament.
