NYU Uses Six Goal Second Half to Outlast Coast Guard & Advance to Division III Club Title Game
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Player of the Game Chris McClure (Gr., Grimsby, Ontario) and Markus Quinn (Jr., Somers, N.Y.) both tallied five goals to lead New York University to a 14-8 win over the United States Coast Guard Academy and a berth in the 2008 Division III Collegiate Club title game on November 2 on the campus of Villanova University.
NYU, which will make its third title game appearance at 11:45 on Sunday following second place finishes to Wesleyan University in 2004 and 2005, will seek to capture its first Division III title and stop 2006 and 2007 champion Lindenwood from becoming the first program to win three consecutive championships.
Against Coast Guard, the Bobcats trailed 5-1 after a period of play, but came back to reverse the scoring and pull even at 6-6 by halftime to set up an exhilirating second half.
Following a goal by Quinn at the 6:40 mark of the third period to give NYU the lead for good, the Bobcats poured on the offense behind an exclusion goal and even strength marker by McClure at the 4:05 and 34 seconds marks and an even strength tally by Lourenzo Araujo (Jr., Sao Paolo, Brazil) with seven seconds left in the quarter for a 10-6 lead.
Coast Guard was unable to overcome the run as McClure and Quinn struck again at 4:51 and 4:33, respectively, in the fourth period to push the lead to 12-6. The Bears cut the lead to five goals at 13-8 with 2:18 to play in the contest, but the Bobcats' defense locked down and McClure added an insurance goal with 38 seconds left in the game as NYU held on for a six goal victory.
For Coast Guard, Jack Shadwick (Sr., Campbell Hall, N.Y.) and Mark Tatara (So., Naperville, Ill.) led the way with hat-tricks.
Between the pipes, Adam Esparza (Sr., Pasadena, Calif.) picked up the win for NYU making six saves, while Ashley Lerner (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) blocked away seven shots for the Bears.
Coast Guard will close out their competition on Sunday at 10:15 a.m. versus Tufts University in the third place game.
